Viral Video 101 // DESIGN 277

Barry Pousman, Former Executive Producer, Rocketboom

Thursday, January 25th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Join us to learn tips and tricks for creating content that spreads. We will discuss the nature of web-video from genres to meta-data and the hubs used for discovery. Through examples of low cost viral successes, we'll uncover some important factors to consider when creating your own content for the web.

This 90 minute session will look at the world of viral video for those interested in creating their own, covering both the content creation and distribution techniques involved. Through classics like GI Joe Pork Chop Sandwiches, the more polished, Will It Blend, and the strange, Charlie the Unicorn, we'll discuss the editorial and delivery choices used. And using YouTube's analytics, we'll be able to see exactly when and where these videos became so popular.

Topics will include a brief history of viral video, the genres of online content, tips and tricks for YouTube SEO and the relevant platforms for promotion and discoverability. We'll use the examples listed above as case studies while we try to crack the nut on becoming internet famous. In a time when most viral videos are just accidents or accidental uploads, it pays to deconstruct the intentional viral successes.

Whether you have a startup which needs a boost in subscribers or you're a digital dad with delusions of grandeur, this session will give you the theoretical and practical know-how for creating your own viral videos.

Barry Pousman is formerly the Executive Producer at Rocketboom, an award winning video blog focused on Internet news and culture. Barry earned his B.A. in visual media with a concentration in documentary filmmaking from Emerson College in Boston. After college, he went on to serve with the U.S. Peace Corps in Senegal where he founded an organization devoted to video and development in West Africa. Since living in New York, he has worked at Rocketboom as director, producer and eventually executive producer where he developed and consulted on two new web series for PBS.org, created original content for Vitamin Water at the Cannes Film Festival and directed sponsored content for Intel.
